My heart problems continue. I have atrial fibrillation, a rapid unstable heartbeat. My last EKG showed a resting heart rate of almost 140 beats per minute. My cardiogist wants to shock my heart back to a normal rhythm. In more pleasant news, my friend Roy is coming in May and we are going on our yearly trip to Vegas! I'm looking forward to playing blackjack and probably losing my shirt.

I am writing this from a Starbucks on Harbor Blvd. in Anaheim, California, just down the street from Disneyland. No, I'm not here to see Mickey and Minnie, just tagging along with my brother on a business trip. The last few weeks have been a blur of emotion and necessity. I flew to Maine for my Mom's graveside service in Orrington, where my family lived before we moved to Bangor, and then Arizona. She was laid to rest alongside my Dad. My brother and two sisters also accompanied me. We buried Mom's ashes and then went to our longtime next-door neighbors, the Haskells, for a get-together thoughtfully arranged by Mrs. Haskell. It was nice to see old friends that I grew up with; they're practically like family. Unfortunately, other friends in Bangor disappointed me. They have not abandoned their old ways vis a vis drug use and partying. I am not judging them; God forbid, I've had enough of my own problems in that regard. It's just that I care about them and it's sad to see them in a downward spiral that will only end badly. Pot has given way to pills. Vicodin is now the drug of choice, along with other powerful painkillers. I was never into these kinds of things. Opiates are just too hard to kick, and they just didn't appeal to me. This stuff is hardcore. I'm afraid for my old pals.

I'm at the age where I have to be more conscious of my body. Yesterday, with the recent death of Farrah Fawcett from anal cancer fresh on my mind, I went into the hospital as an outpatient to have a colonoscopy performed. This procedure looks for signs of anal and/or colorectal cancer and any other maladies associated with that area. I was nervous, both about the procedure, and about the outcome. Well, I needn't have been! I was sedated and don't remember anything about the time it was done. And, they gave me a clean bill of health (as far as my colon is concerned). If you are fifty or over, or have any unusual symptoms associated with that region, please get a colonoscopy. It could save your life!

Here on this, our nation's Independence Day, I want to voice my opinion about the state of this great country. I have not said much since Obama was elected, in order to be fair and give him some time to try to solve some of our many problems. Well, so far it doesn't look good. Even lifelong lefty Helen Thomas is livid about the White House press corps being fed questions in advance in order to try to control the news about Obama and company. Unemployment continues to increase. It's now up to almost ten percent. The housing market is still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Credit reform is a joke. Corporations are being seized and nationalized in an unprecendented manner. And don't get me started about the deficit. We are selling out this country! Is all the money spent really doing any good? Trillions spent already; and much more to come if Obama gets his way with national health care. Most of us don't want it, but like much during this first six months of King Barrack's reign, we're going to get it regardless now that Al Franken has been declared the senate winner in Minnesota. The already insufferable Democrats now have a filibuster-proof majority in Congress. God help us. I don't want to live in a socialist country.

Oh, the latest bill was cut down a bit, but is still outrageous at some 780 billion of our money, which will eventually come due. New total we owe: 2 trillion dollars. Holy shit. So much for bipartisanship, which was promised by our President when he ran for office. So much for the future of this country. So much for "hope, instead of fear." Fear was the main tactic to get this porkfest passed so fast. No help to relieve the mortgage crisis in this bill. Some tax cuts, but mostly just more Democratic pork. Just more BULLSHIT. It's not even a Republican or Democrat thing anymore. Both parties are guilty. It's just politics as usual. We are being sold out. Socialism is coming. Better get ready. What a Super Bowl! It was supposed to be a boring routine Steelers blowout. Surprise! The Arizona Cardinals proved they can play with the big boys by staging the biggest point comeback in Super Bowl history. The previous record was ten points. The Cards gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a helluva time up until the end. The final score: Steelers 27, Cardinals 23. Turnovers, penalty flags galore, and plenty of nail biting on both sides. Kurt Warner and company have nothing to be ashamed of. I should think Pittsburgh fans have a newfound respect for our boys in red and white. I am so proud of their Rocky-like rise to real contention in the biggest game in football. With what the Cardinals have built this season, WAIT 'TIL NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!

I started letting my guard down, just a little. Maybe she changed in the last few months. I believe in giving people a second chance. Or maybe I'm desperate for company. Whatever. Second time, OE! The bitch turned psycho again. She told me she was going to pay for my movie, then abruptly changed her mind and said her passes were for her and her daughter. Spooky! OK. I shoulda left her and her evil spawn at the theater. But noooo... I signed up for the extended mindfuck. We went to get something to eat before the flick. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, if you give a shit. Three hours of torture. Not the movie. Having to sit through the movie mad. Brad Pitt was actually good. Anyway, back to the story. We go to Cheeburger Cheeburger at Tempe Marketplace and split a Cheeburger and fries. Evil spawn has her own grub. Skinny kid doesn't eat much anyway, unlike her fat mom. I slap a ten on the counter and ask Sandroid if that is OK. She says yes. Actually, it was MORE than enough for my half. But it gets better. Sandy (she hates being called that) asks me if I have enough for a tip. She could've covered it with her debit card, but noooo. I slap another five down. She says she'll pay me back when she changes the ten I already gave her. The bill was 22 bucks. That included her kid's food. Fine. We go to the movie. Sandy baby wants me to get her a drink. She hands me the ten. I say sure, I'll just take the five she owes me from the change. She looks at me with that look. That look that says "what the fuck do you mean?" She then says, "but I just spent 22 dollars on dinner!" Jesus Christ. My stomach turned and I almost felt sick. I replied "if it's that important to you, keep the money!" And she did. I sat through the whole movie wishing I were somewhere else, ANYWHERE ELSE but with this cheap, psycho fuck. She manipulated me into paying 15 bucks for that fucking meal, and she laid out seven and change. She made me pay for my own movie ticket, after offering to take me out. What a pro. And I wasn't even getting laid. Finally, the loooong movie ended. I drove chubby Sandroid and her pencil-thin progeny home in still stunned silence. We haven't spoken since. I can't wait for her to call. NOT!

What a year. I lost two friends (well, I thought they were friends, but...) , got clean again, and the day after Christmas my brother-in-law, Harold, had a heart attack. He was told he would have died over the weekend had he not sought medical attention. Yesterday he had quadruple-bypass surgery, and is expected to recover fully. Thank God. Here's to 2009!

I've just listened to the new Guns n' Roses CD, Chinese Democracy. It was worth the fifteen or sixteen year wait. I forget how long it's been. I tried in vain to find filler on the album. Every song is great. A lot has been written about Axl Rose since he undertook this effort, much of it negative. It seemed like it would never see the light of day. I think Rose had his reasons for waiting so long to release the CD. It may have not been humanly or technologically possible to put this sound on record until now. It's that good. Personally, I think Axl Rose is a genius. Chinese Democracy is a blisteringly good rock n' roll experience, an instant classic. It really shows the craft and love that went into it. Guns n' Roses Lives! Even without most of the other original members...

Friends are a funny thing. You can know some of them well; others are peripheral. Let me clarify that; you can think you know them well. As I approach the golden age of fifty, I find that some people are not who I thought they were. I have lost two friends recently; one male, the other female. I didn't lose them for any other reason except differences in opinion. The female was someone I met at work eleven years ago. I considered her a marginal type of friend. She was in and out of my life since I met her. We had some things in common, especially the love of music. Punk and rock n' roll to be specific. Other than that, she was okay, but she kind of annoyed me at times. She could be petty; so can we all. She could be cheap; guilty also. But she was the type who would invite you out to lunch and then ask you to order the most inexpensive item on the menu. Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe if you invite someone out to eat you should trust them to order reasonably. She would also leave very small tips, even when the service was great. I would ask her what the bill was so I could leave a bigger tip and she would get mad and defensive. Or she would promise something one day and then change the terms or not do what she said at all. I am the type that would rather not be promised something unless it can be reasonably delivered. Don't dangle a carrot stick in front of me unless you mean business! If you are just talking to hear yourself talk, then talk about things that don't involve me. So, I grew tired of her bullshit and let her go. The other former friend I knew for many years, since high school. He came from a rather unhappy home. We had lots in common, including our love of Monty Python, pot, and music. He had a crazy sense of humor that was in evidence until the last couple of years. Then he started to obsess over my political positions. He would seemingly get very angry when I posted items on this blog he didn't agree with. Of course he has a right to his opinion, but his replies grew increasingly erratic and mean. Finally, he got mad at me because I wrote an entry on another one of my blogs that was a fictionalized story regarding something that happened to us in high school. I used his first name and he flipped. I changed the name at his urging, but that wasn't enough. He wanted it taken down and personally attacked me with very rude language insisting on it. I didn't see the harm of a story not using his full name and real places, etc. No reasonable person would have objected; without real information, it couldn't be traced back to them. To make a long story short, he now doesn't communicate with me anymore. I can't say after the incredibly mean things he said about me and my family that I am entirely upset with this. But, after thinking I knew him all these years, he has disappointed me greatly. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, if he will do the same for me. But something tells me that is not going to happen. Life is too short for this foolishness. I forgive him. But I will not forget what he said.

It's official. Our new President is Barack Hussein Obama. I am proud of our country for electing a Black President. We have come so far as a nation. Just 150 years ago, we still had slavery, and were about to enter a terrible war because of it. Just 100 years ago, racism was rampant with Birth of a Nation, the KKK, minstrel shows, lynchings, etc. 50 years ago, segregation was still in full effect in much of the country, especially the South. Whites and "coloreds" were kept apart by Jim Crow laws. 45 years ago, the Civil Rights movement put an end to that. Then, in April 1968, Martin Luther King, who was at the forefront of civil rights, was gunned down in Memphis. Just over 40 years later, we elect, by an electoral landslide, the United States' first African-American President. How far we've come, so fast. I voted for John McCain. Not because he was White. Because I thought he was the best choice for the job. However, now that Obama is President-elect, I fully support him. He will be our President come January 20, 2009. I call on all Americans to stand behind our new President. He has tough times ahead of him. I don't agree with many of his policies, but am still hopeful that he can rise to greatness. Maybe it is time for a real change. Now we get our chance. Let's show the world what America can accomplish when we all work together.

I always liked the band Weezer. I just wasn't in love with them. Sure, their songs Buddy Holly, The Sweater Song, and Hash Pipe were pleasant enough, and Hash Pipe even rocks out, but I just wasn't enamored of Weezer's overall sound. Until last night. I saw Weezer live, for just six bucks after a discount, at the Arizona State Fair in Phoenix. Holy Shit! I have seen the light. I cried, I laughed, I sang along with 14,000 other Weezer devotees whom the band had eating out of their hands. These guys are fucking geniuses. They harmonize live like no one I have ever heard. They are like a combination of the Beach Boys, Beatles, and Hendrix. Oh, and Pink Floyd. Yeah. Weezer did a version of Floyd's Time from Dark Side of the Moon which made me think I'd just took a hit of acid. And I was totally sober. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Pop/rock perfection! I guess their recordings just didn't bring out to me what I heard live last night. Now they will. I am now a convert, after all these years. I will spread the gospel of Weezer. I just wish I had seen them live long before this. Times a wastin'... I must go out and buy their catalog now. Every single album...

Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright is dead of cancer at the age of 65. Wright was one of the founding members of Floyd in 1965 along with Syd Barrett, who predeceased him. Wright wrote The Great Gig in the Sky and Us and Them on 1973's epic Dark Side of the Moon. He was relegated to being a session player for Floyd during The Wall tour due to band infighting, primarily with another founding member, Roger Waters, who wanted him fired. Waters left Floyd in 1985 and Wright returned to the band, reuniting with Nick Mason and David Gilmour. In 2005, Wright played on stage for the first time in 25 years with Waters, Mason and Gilmour at Live 8 in London. Pink Floyd is one of my all-time favorite bands and Wright will be missed.

My Mom is 83 years old. Our family (and she) never thought she'd live to be this age. She is a survivor, really hangin' in there. I have put her through so much, and she still forgives me. It helps that now I can do something for her. She is on dialysis (born with only one kidney, and it finally caught up with her) and she needs me to drive her three times a week for treatments. This is a win-win situation. I am helping her, and helping myself feel needed and justified for staying at home. I am now working for my room and board. My mom can't drive, and if I weren't there, she would have limited options for getting around because my brother travels for a living and is often gone. Things happen for a reason...

I feel like I've been on a long trip. I haven't felt like posting in awhile. I guess sometimes it's better to lay low and let things happen. The deep depression I've experienced in the past seems to be over. I'm exercising again (God, if I don't I'm going to balloon to 400 lbs.!) and feel better than I've felt in years. The drug use has subsided, although I did have a short relapse back in June. I am optimistic about the future and can even handle it if Obama is elected. I am not happy with the way the Bush administration has handled things the past few years. I admit this now. Maybe a change would be good for the country. I like McCain generally, but I wonder if he really has a chance. His age and the Republican Bush baggage seem to be insurmountable. We'll see. Get out and vote or you'll have no reason to bitch come November!

OK. I'm going to admit it. The Bush Administration has not been the success in dealing with the world I thought it would be. We have not been attacked on U.S. soil since 9/11, I'll give 'em that. I think this country is doing pretty well keeping the terrorists at bay. For now. There is still much we could do security-wise. Our ports really need to be secured. Airports still let all kind of items (and people) though security. Our borders leak illegals in like a sieve. Democracy is not busting out all over. The world doesn't hate us so much anymore, not because of anything Bush has done, but because China, Russia, India, et al, are too busy growing by leaps and bounds and sucking up food, oil, and other energy and resources. America had better wise up to this world reality, and fast. This is more pressing than "global warming." Most foreigners, I believe, like our people. They just don't like our government. Unfortunately, despite what the neocons preached the last eight years, it is much more complicated than "you are either with us or against us." I see that now.

No conflict of interest or commercial hardships will occur from the combining of the competing services, the government agency said. The Federal Communications Commission has final say on the matter, hopefully soon. Now I'm still fat, but the therapists tell me I'm VERY COORDINATED! It only took fifty years or so...

Oh The Pain, The Pain!

As one of my favorite classic TV characters, Dr. Smith, said some forty years ago on Lost In Space, "oh the pain, THE PAIN!" My newly delicate back went into spasm overdrive a few days ago, and I was taken by ambulance to the hospital. It hurt like a motherfucker. Shot right down my left leg. It felt like a nuclear charlyhorse. They IV'd me with morphine, and several other powerful narcotics WHICH HAD ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT. At least, not right away. By the time I was discharged about four hours later, I was in la-la land. Yeah, yeah, I'm a bi-polar prone to additive behavior. Big fucking deal. I am not one of those, who, God love them, eschew any and all medication based on the notion that taking even prescribed drugs is falling off the wagon. If I'm in physical agony, GIMME THAT DAMN PERCOCET!!! AHHHHHH YEAHHHH. My tolerance for painkillers is sky high. I've ruined it with heavy drug use over the years. Handfuls of Vicodin barely register with me. I cannot abuse them unless I have huge quantities, and I was never into opiates anyway. I'm off the pain pills now, and my back is almost back to normal with physical therapy. I'm mentally happier than I've been in years, and Led Zeppelin might be touring this year. I'm in fucking heaven! Here's to 2008.

Oh, My Delicate Back...

I haven't felt that good this month... Mentally I'm rather happy; it's the physical part that is troubling. Added to the growing list of health problems I have developed is lower back pain. I'm on three muscle relaxers! The last week or so I was totally laid up and not much good for anything. I feel better now. I have an MRI scheduled to see if we can figure out if it's just minor or (cue ominous music), A RUPTURED DISC! OEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! However, on the bright side, I can use this excuse to get out of heavy lifting, at least for now!

Talk about feeling guilty. I just found out this morning from my on again-off again friend Sandra, that the cancer she previously told me about (without being specific) is ovarian which has spread to her cervix. I feel guilty because I have been skeptical of her really being sick because she doesn't look ill, and she would never tell me what kind of cancer it was. I thought maybe she was trying to get sympathy. I realize she has every right to privacy, and it's none of my business unless she wants me to know. I also realize now that people with cancer often don't look sick. I am in the process of learning a big lesson from this. Maybe I should trust people until they give me a reason not to. Maybe I shouldn't be so nosy. And just maybe I should consider myself lucky to have what I have. Sandra's prognosis is not good, and yet she handles daily life with such patience and fortitude. I think God has put her in my life so I will be a better person. Sandra certainly is a fine example of a good person. I wish I had realized that much earlier.

Phoenix and national media are buzzing about the Grand Jury indictment, arrest and subsequent dropping of charges against two Phoenix New Times newspaper owners for printing the address of Maricopa County Sheriff and publicity hound Joe Arpaio on their web site.. What has been overlooked is that Arpaio's home address is easily found on public record websites. Why haven't these been targeted? The whole matter is an embarrassment for Arpaio and Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas. Maybe these two should lie really low for awhile... First Amendment issues aside, this was a colossal blunder on their part. I guess Arpaio and Thomas don't believe in freedom of speech, unless it's for them to spew out their outrageous accusations against media coverage they don't agree with.

Who's Responsible?

Recently, a alcoholic New York woman, Carol Gotbaum, traveled alone and wound up at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport waiting to connect to a flight to a Tucson rehab. While at the airport, Gotbaum went into a bar and drank. Not a surprise. What was surprising is that she was ALONE on a cross-country trip and freaked out after drinking. She was detained by Sky Harbor police and placed in a holding cell. Unfortunately, that cell had no cameras to monitor her. Gotbaum was left alone in handcuffs for a few minutes and was found dead. Her grieving husband quickly lawyered up and went on a crusade to find out why she was left by herself in her condition. He had called the airport many times to warn them of her condition, but AFTER she was already dead. Who is responsible here? The police or Gotbaum (and in turn her family)? In my experience with addiction, well documented in this blog, she should never have been allowed to travel cross-country alone to go to rehab. NEVER! While I sympathize with her condition and her family's sorrow, they have only themselves to blame. The airport police had no idea of her plight (Gotbaum was reportedly incoherent), and followed procedure. Sky Harbor should, however, install cameras in their holding areas if they haven't done so already.
